The onset of winter has sparked interest in making homes more energy efficient. Nebraskans can apply for the Low Income Weatherization Assistance Program which enables low-income families to reduce their energy bills by making their homes more energy efficient. Typical weatherization improvements made to homes include adding wall and attic insulation, caulking, weather-stripping and sealing air leaks. Furnaces and water heaters also receive a safety inspection.
Eligibility for free weatherization is based primarily on income. Households with incomes at or below 125 percent of the federal poverty level are eligible. An easy-to-use table lists income maximums by size of family. In addition, households containing a member receiving either Aid to Dependent Children (ADC) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are automatically eligible.
The Nebraska Energy Office administers the weatherization program. Nine local, non-profit agencies across the state take applications, verify eligibility and arrange to have the weatherization work done. Annually, more than 1,300 homes are weatherized in Nebraska.
