Nebraska's Methane Production Capacity

There is one commercial methane plant in Nebraska whose methane is its end product and does not generate electricity. See the Biomass Energy Generation report for plants who use methane to generate electricity.

  • Big Ox Energy, in South Sioux City, takes organic waste from industrial plants and turns it into methane. The company's technology includes an anaerobic digestion process that extracts organic waste nutrients to create the methane. The plant's nameplate capacity is 1.5 billion Btu per day. It is planned that the fuel will be sold into a natural gas pipeline adjacent to the facility for customer use.
